GMO testing

In 2009, approvals existed for more than 140 GMO varieties (so-called events) worldwide. Due to this great number of GMO, GMO testing is very complex and requires different steps of analysis. An initial screening by real-time PCR has been established as a widespread method for the routine GMO analysis of food and feed samples. BIOTECON Diagnostics has long been offering the popular foodproof® GMO Screening Kit for the detection of the two most frequently used screening elements in GM plants, the 35S promoter and the NOS terminator.

For even more comprehensive GMO testing, the newly developed foodproof® GMO Screening Kit (35S, NOS, bar, FMV), 5’Nuclease is the first kit in the market to simultaneously detect four of the most relevant screening elements in just one unique multiplex real-time PCR. As the kit is based on the TaqMan® technology, comprehensive GMO testing is possible for laboratories using instruments from suppliers such as Applied Biosystems, Bio-Rad, Agilent Technologies etc.

The next step in GMO testing is identification and GMO quantification. For that purpose, BIOTECON Diagnostics offers the foodproof® GMO Maize Quantification Kit and the foodproof® GMO Soya Quantification Kit. With these GMO detection methods, quantification of the maize event Bt176 and the soya event Roundup Ready® is possible in order to determine whether the investigated food is below or above the regulatory labeling threshold.
